Bovine Colostrum Offers Broad-Spectrum Benefits for Wide-Ranging Ailments

During our interview at the semi-annual convention of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), November 21,1998, Nikki-Marie Welch, MD, of Sedona, Arizona discussed her experiences with prescribing bovine colostrum. We sat at the rear of the Phoenix Civic Plaza's largest lecture hall during that morning's refreshment break from ACAM'S formal presentations.

Dr. Welch said, "Colostrum is valuable to me both personally and within my practice. I consider colostrum an important therapeutic aid for all patients who have chronic infections, including bacterial, viral, or fungal. Examples of such infections involve recurrent sinusitis, bronchitis, hepatitis, urinary tract infections [UTI], and other bacterial invasions; herpes, Epstein Barr, and additional viral diseases; plus the yeast syndrome of candidiasis. I start everyone who consults me for acute infections on bovine colostrum. But in my experience, the patients who gain the most from this nutritional supplement are those with chronic and recurrent disease symptoms such as chronic fatigue syndrome, infectious diarrhea, sinusitis, and fibromyalgia.

"I have not as yet used bovine colostrum for treating giardia or some other protozoa, but it seems worth the try. For the past 18 months, colostrum has been an integral part of my therapeutic regimen, especially for those with sinusitis, which is very common where I practice. It has been quite remarkable in clearing up chronic swelling of the nasal sinuses, which may be a complication of an upper respiratory infection, dental infection, allergy, a change in atmosphere as in air travel or underwater swimming, or as a defect of the nose," explained Dr. Welch.

"Most of my allergy patients who take colostrum get through the hay fever season without difficulty. Additionally, those people who experience three or four yearly UTIs do very well by making bovine colostrum a part of their routine dietary supplementation." Dr. Welch stated. "Without fail, it reduces the recurrence of their UTI. Upon my recommendation, the few lung disease patients in my practice now are also taking colostrum because it contributes to improved functioning of their lungs.

"So generally, I am administering bovine colostrum as an immune system booster. I think its use would be good for all people prophylactically, and I suggest its use to any patient who needs that kind of immunological pickup. As a wholistic-minded physician, I strongly believe in employing it for a minimum of one out of three patients. That's what I do in my practice, and I take colostrum myself," acknowledged Dr. Welch. "That's because I have a history of metastatic breast cancer. This nutritional supplement has become a part of my routine immune-boosting protocol. Any time I become exposed to a contagious patient or some other source of infection, I immediatelly increase my colostrum intake.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) On a routine basis I ingest about four colostrum capsules per day merely for purposes of daily prophylaxis.  But if I feel a scratchy throat or some type of GI [gastrointestinal] distress coming on, I will increase my dosage to aa couple of capsules every two or three hours up to 12 a day for a few days.  Colostrum is administered in powder and capsule forms.  For myself, it's mostly capsules that work best, but recently I've added the powder as well.  The powder seems most effective for improving the functioning of a patient's GI tract, in particular difficulties with the stomach," said Dr. Welch.  "The powder works very well for treating infectious diarrhea.  Colostrum may either e added to a couple ounces of water and 'chug-a-lugged' or popped into the mouth and swished around the oral mucous membranes and swallowed or taken sublingually.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Bovine colostrum is a white powder that tastes similar to human breastfeeding milk.  It's the first food produced by the cow for a calf and has over 250 substances in it.  There is almost no milk in bovine colostrum, but approximately one out of twenty-five patients tend to experience mild gastrointestinal distress from taking it.  Manufacturing of the substance as a nutritional product for human consumption is very delicate," Dr. Welch advised.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) "Frequently colostrum is incorporated into cosmetics and other skin preparations. It may be utilized topically for application to burns, decubital ulcers, other poor-healing wounds. Topical healing is dramatically improved by sprinkling this substance onto the wound or applying it as a paste after combining the powder with a small amount of purified water," said Dr. Welch. "It probably has enzymatic qualities; definitely it contains epithelial (epidermal) growth factors which bring about rapid topical healing.

"One of my patients histories which took place approximately one year ago relates to a strong-minded, 82 year-old Australian woman who suffered from a really severe cellulitis of the lower extremity. This patient was extremely anti-hospital, anti-doctor, and anti-allopathic medicine. She refused to receive any type of drug therapy. I was forced to work on the infection with topically applied bovine colostrum paste along with warm soaks. Also, I prescribed oral colostrum for her. The cellulitis cleared beautifully within two weeks," said Dr. Welch. "This was a cellulitis patient who, under other circumstances, I would have hospitalized."

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) "Recently I put a 79 year-old man with hepatitis C on oral bovine colostrum and he is now feeling much better.
His strange-looking skin lesions -- elevated, crusty, almost wart-like projections from his forearms -- for which I had proposed a referral to a dermatologist, cleared up quickly as well.  

This happened from my taking a chance first with applying topical colostrum.  The patient's keratosis-like lesions all disappeared while we were awaiting his dermatogic appointment date," said Dr. Welch.

"One of my staff people acquired severe gingivitis.  She required extensive periodontal care which was quoted to her at a fee of $ 2000.00.  Instead, by her use of high-dose vitamin C and bovine colostrum both externally and internally, her gums improved so much she was able to avoid dental treatment altogether," concluded Dr. Nikki-Marie Welch.

Robert Preston, MD, President of the International Institute of Nutritional Research, discussed the broad-spectrum immune factors which make bovine colostrum a natural protection against illnesses of many types.  Dr. Preston defines colostrum in the following manner:  "When a mother animal gives birth to its offspring, its mammary glands filter out of the blood the immune factors it has acquired through a lifetime of fighting disease-causing organisms.  It then concentrates these factors into special non-milk immune supporting fluid called  colostrum.  A mother animal produces true colostrum for only the first twenty-four hours after giving birth."

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes)  Writing in Alternative & Complementary Therapies, Stephen Holt, MD, President of the Fairfield, New Jersey firm, BioTherapies, Inc, says:  "The use of colostrum as a promoter of health and well-being has been recognized for centuries and its use is deeply rooted in the act of 'filial piety' in Ancient Chinese Culture...
Antigen-specific transfer factor (TF) can be obtained from colostrum or milk that is secreted by the mammary gland of a mammal that has been exposed to a variety of environmental antigens.  The idea that a fraction of colostrum contains TF that can be administered to transfer cell-mediated immunity is very intriguing, given the widespread availability of colostrum of bovine origin and the establishment of techniques for the collection of concentrates of TF and its purification for use as a  dietary supplement."

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes)  Colostrum, since it is as old as motherhood, is the original and most primordially known nutritional substance for enhancing immunity.  Four main immune system enhancing fractions exist in colostrum.  They are (1) the growth factor fraction,   (2) the immunoglobulin fraction, (3) the putative permeability fraction, (4) a fraction containing enzymes, proteins, odd peptides, and other compounds of lesser interest.

Thus, colostrum contains not only calories and nutrients but additionally, certain powerful growth stimulators such as the insulin-like growth factor (IGF).  The two peptides labeled IGF-2  and the far more potent IGF-1 are mini-proteins resembling their namesake, the hormone insulin.  IGF promotes protein synthesis without stimulating the storage of fat tissue.  Also these IGF peptides are closely related to the hormone somatotrophin, better known as human growth hormone, about which there has recently been massive amounts of excitement for its rejuvenation effect.

Human growh hormone (hGH) works by its variable effects on IGF inside the muscle cell.   Ingesting the IGF present in colostrum mediates the actions that hGH directs, but it does something more.  Bovine colostrum's IGF promotes muscle growth by itself and stimulates muscle growth even in the absence of hGH.  While everybody requires the physiological production of hGH, it's likely that if one supplements with bovine colostrum the taking of extra hGH becomes unnecessary.

In his book, Grow Young with hGH, Ronald Klatz, DO, of Chicago, President of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and his co-auther, medical journalist Carol Kahn, state outright that taking hGH offers the consumer a variety of physiological benefits.  They include:

* an 8.8% increase in muscle mass on average after six months, without engaging in any
   exercise,
* a 14.4% loss of adipose tissue on average after six months, without any strict dieting,
* a higher energy level,
* an enlarged sexual performance,
* the regrowth of heart, liver, spleen, kidneys, and other  organs that ordinarily shrink with age,
* a greater cardiac output,
* superior immune competence,
* increased exercise performance,
* better kidney function,
* lowered blood pressure in the presence of hypertension,
* an improved cholesterol profile, with higher HDL and lower LDL,
* stronger bones,
* faster wound healing,
* younger, tighter, and thicker skin,
* hair re-growth on newly bald areas,
* wrinkle removal,
* elimination of cellulite,
* sharper vision,
* mood elevation,
* increased memory retention,
* improved sleep.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Today's nutritionally-oriented endocrinologists and other medical scientists know that all of these benefits are available without the need to take drugs containing human growth hormone.  My research reveals that any of us may acquire similar hGH effects by adding dried, powdered bovine colostrum to our diet.  It contains a higher concentration of IGF-1 than human colostrum, and its structure is virtually identical.   Human IGF-1 and bovine IGF-1 differ by only three amino acids in the sixty-seven amino acid chain that makes up the IGF-1 molecule.  Because of this similarity, bovine IGF-1 is just as potent as the human form and, I judge it's probably a lot safer than synthesized hGH.

In addition to IGF-1, bovine colostrum contains a more viable version of hGH, designated as truncated IGF-1 [or des (1-3) IGF-1].  This truncated IGF-1 is ten times more potent than regular IGF-1 and provides powerful cellular growth stimulation for animals even in the absence of growth hormone.  Currently the genetic engineering companies are producing des (1-3) IGF-1 in the laboratory in order to turn it into a pharmaceutical product.

The mechanisms by which IGF in colostrum spurs growth parallels those involving insulin and hGH.  It increases the transport of amino acids into cells and elevates the uptake of blood glucose.  This mechanism slows the rate of metabolism so as to be protein-sparing, even in the face of caloric deficiency and protein deprivation.   Without any corresponding rise in adipose tissue, colostrum's IGF-1 speeds protein synthesis, causes greater utilization of fat for energy, lessens the body's dependency on carbohydrate, and increases lean muscle mass.  The oral administration of bovine colostrum furnishes all of these same physiological attributes which are known to occur with the ingestion of hGH.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes)  Is IGF-1 Denatured in the Stomach ?

During the decades that bovine colostrum has been used for dietary supplementation, it was believed that its IFG-1, which was expected to accomplish protein synthesis, would be denatured in the stomach.  Most sports nutritionists had believed that IGF-1 might very well be absorbed as something else and not remain as the actual beneficial IGF-1.

In April 1997, six Finnish biologists, four from the University of Jyvaskyla in Jyvaskyla and two working at the Turku Technology Center in Turku, conducted studies and reported that consuming bovine colostrum does increase the levels of IGF-1.  In their experiments, nine male sprinters and jumpers underwent three randomized 8-day treatments separated by thirteen days.  Subjects were given either 25 ml or 125 ml of bovine colostrum, or a placebo or normal milk whey.  The bovine colostrum, in both the low and high dose, produced a significant increase in IGF-1 concentration during the supplementation period.  This result of the study indicates that IGF-1 is not denatured in the stomach.  In contrast, the milk whey had no effect on the participating sprinters and jumpers because whey does lose its identity in the stomach.

Since human and bovine IGF-1 have identical amino acid sequences, the increase in plasma IGF-1 is determined to be due to either direct absorption of the growth factor from bovine colostrum or increased stimulation of IGF-1 secretion in response to training.   The IGF-1 values increased in a linear fashion, meaning that as the time of supplementation increases, so do the values of IGF-1.  A longer supplementation period (more than the meager eight days of this study) could produce an even better IGF-1 response.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Colostrum Use Against Infectious Diarrhea and Other Infections

Since the mid-1980's, diarrhea in children caused by rotavirus has been treated successfully with bovine colostrum.  For instance, in 1989, 120 children infected with the stereotypes of rotavirus were divided into two groups.  Fifty-five were fed bovine colostrum and sixty-five were given artificial formula.  None from the colostrum trial group but nine from the control group deleloped diarrhea.  Parents of children from the control group sought medical attention seven times more often than those in the trial group.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) In 1995, another clinical study was conducted to test the concept that colostrum protects children against infectious diarrhea.  The children were treated with hyper-immune bovine colostrum were not only protected from getting diarrhea, but also showed a shortened course of the disease.

A series of three investigations were carried out, respectively, in February 1980, June 1990, and then in 1996, for hyper-immune bovine colostrum's effect against diarrhea caused by the invasion of Cryptosporidium.  The medical researchers demonstrated favorable anti diarrhea responses for patients in all three studies.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Lester Adler, MD, Medical Director of the Sedona Center for Complementary Medicine of Sedona, Arizona, said,  "I use bovine colostrum intermittently but successfully for upper respiratory infections of all types, especially for sinusitis, which is a frequent health difficulty in Sedona.  For example, a carpenter, age 42, consulting me for the treatment of sinus congestion which comes on him once annually, responded right away to my prescribing capsules containing bovine colostrum."

Joseph, DC, of Honolulu, Hawaii, who distributes colostrum to the chiropractic community, stated,  "I have used bovine colostrum a lot for my patients, in particular to stimulate the immune systems of older folks rather than have them take immune shots every year.  I've employed it to treat chronic sinus infections which are complicating patients' allergies.  For myself, I have used an entire bottle of 120 capsules in one day to knockout a severe sinusitis.  This elevated dosage of ten capsules every hour eliminated my sinus problem immediately.   One of my referrals, a 45-year man, responded well when I recommended colostrum for his Graves disease."

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Carl Hawkins, DC, of Salt Lake City, Utah, said, "My experience with bovine colostrum has been quite phenomenal when it comes to fibromyalgia cases.  One has to be careful when it comes to colostrum sources, but an excellent source provides a truly beneficial treatment of fibromyalgia when patients have not responded to anything else.   Within two to three weeks their fatigue, muscle and joint pains, and other symptoms are all gone.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Human and Animal Pathogens Respond to Bovine Colostrum

Inasmuch as the current over-use of antibiotics has led to drug-resistant strains of common infectious bacteria, a quest to find viable alternatives to conventional antibiotics has been carried forward.  Bovine colostrum was tried by clinicians, and they have succeeded exceedingly well with it !

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Bovine colostrum showed itself effective in the treatment of 19 human and animal pathogens.  Responders among them are Helicobacter pylori, Helicobcdter mustelae (a gastric pathogen in ferrets), Canda albicans, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Listeria, and others.  For example, a study of bovine colostrum published in the April 1998 issue of Journal of Infectious Diseases readily demonstrated the product's usefulness against H. pylori and H. mustelae.

The study's nine investigators represented four institutions: (1) the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia,  (2) the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada,  (3) the University of Wurzburg in Wurzburg, Germany, and (4) Biotest Pharma GmbH in Dreiech, Germany.  The researchers wrote:  "... We showed that bovine colostrum has potential anti-adhesive activity for both H. pylori and H. mustelae.  The findings demonstrate that colostrum-derived factor(s) can block the interaction of these gastric pathogens with selected lipids in vitro."

Added to the above study was an investigation examining the performance of bovine colostrum on a full range of pathogens.  The experiment was carried out at the University of Otago in New Zealand.  In this study, three different dairy products were employed for purposes of examining their effect on pathogenic microorganisms.   The three products consisted of (1) bovine colostrum, (2) hyper immunized skim milk, and (3) plain skim milk.  Results were charted, and colostrum proved to be highly effective against virtually all of the microbial invaders.  The types of skim milk were ineffective."

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Bovine Colostrum Corrects Problems with Intestinal Permeability

Leo Galland, MD, of New York City advises us that excessive intestinal permeability allows absorption of toxins derived from the chemical activity of intestinal bacteria.   The symptoms produced by too much intestinal permeability may be limited to the abdomen or they can involve the entire body.  The symptoms are likely to include such discomforts as fatigue and malaise, joint and muscle pain, plus headache and skin eruptions."  Associated clinical disorders also involve inflammation of the large or small intestine (colitis and enteritis), chronic arthritis, skin conditions such as acne, eczema, hives, or psoriasis, migraine headaches, chronic fatigue, deficient pancreatic function, and AIDS.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Colostrum Trials for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Reported in 1996, an open-label trial of colostrum for relieving the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was undertaken during the period 1992-1993 at the Mathilda and Terence Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in London, England.  The treatment with colostrum led to rapid improvement for every patient in all parameters of RA disease activity.

For RA therapy, Infopeptides, the specific protein derivatives obtained from bovine colostrum, induce anti-inflammatory cytokine-type activity (see the subsection, "Therapeutic Components," below), allowing a person's immune system to reorient or correct its response mechanism against autoimmune disease processes.  Thus, bovine colostrum product works as a true immunomodulator.  The effects of Infopeptides in humans demonstrate marked reductions of inflammation, edema, pain and fever.

Publishing the results of their clinical trial using colostrum for twelve RA patients and ten osteoarthritis (OA) patients and ten osteoarthritis (OA) patients, Alejandro Nitsch, MD, and Fabiola P. Nitsch, MD, both of Guatemala City, Guatemala, reported excellent patient responses to bovine colostrum for the two arthritides.   Drs. Nitsch and Nitsch wrote: "After a minimum three-month follow-up, the results were outstanding.  Clinical and subjective improvement (i.e., subjective and objective reduction or disappearance of pain, edema and inflammation, improvement in joint mobility, and better tolerance to physical activity) was documented after two to six weeks of treatment ... After the initial trials, we concluded that the colostrum derived product contains one or more immunomodulating agents that promote anti-inflammatory cytokine-type activity resembling the anti-inflammatory activity of cytokines 4, 10, 13, 15, 16.   [Author's note: Cytokines are numbered interleukins, one of a family of proteins that control aspects of hemopoiesis and the immune response.  Twelve interleukins are currently chacterized by the medical profession.]

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) "The results of this initial clinical trial are very significant, not only because of the high level of clinical response of the whole group of patients, but also because of the sustained benefit and improvement of prolonged therapy.  Its oral administration, its low costs when compared to other current experimental biological response modifiers, and the absence of side effects are remarkable as well.   Nevertheless, to us, as clinicians, the most valuable aspect of this new therapeutic alternative [bovine colostrum] is its profound effect on pain relief," concluded Dr. Alejandro Nitsch and Dr. Fabiola P. Nitsch.

Dr. Stephen Hynes Confirms Colostrum's Anti-Arthritic Effect

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Telephoning from San Angelo, Texas, Stephen Hynes, ND, told me about his application of bovine colostrum for a variety of patients' health problems.  Dr. Hynes' clinic is actually located in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, which is six blocks across the border from Del Rio, Texas.

"I have a number of patients who are arthritic, and bovine colostrum dispensed for the treatment of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis has provided them with amazingly good results.  One small-boned elderly gentleman who was terribly overweight did suffer in total agony from rheumatoid arthritis.  He could hardly walk.  I put him on colostrum, about a bottle if 120 capsules per week, and he soon reached the point where he could walk without pain even though he did not lose the weight," Dr. Hynes said.

"I used bovine colostrum for the arthritic treatment of my 56 year-old mother.   Her left knee  exhibited a lot of inflammation as the result of having been damaged in a prior automobile accident.  I had tried a number of different therapies such as shark cartilage and MSM [methylsulphonylmethane] without success, but when I added the bovine colostrum she was painfree in three days.  She now takes it religiously.

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) "In Mexico, my staff and I do a lot of work with cancer and two thirds of my cancer patients are taking colostrum," said Dr. Hynes.  About half of my patients are poverty-stricken, and I stretch my resources to help them by dispensing colostrum to them at little or no cost.  For those who can afford it, I typically have them take five or more 480 milligram capsules a day, that's over 2000 mg.  Colostrum really does seem to make a beneficial difference for my cancer patients.  They have more energy.  And it keeps down some of their infections as a complication of the illness.

"I am giving colostrum to hepatitis C patients.  One of these people living in Northern Califormia who found it impossible to come to Mexico, consulted me by phone.  His situation was really serious because he had a hepatitis C viral load of 8 million.  I put together a protocol for him of bovine colostrum, calcium orotate, reduced glutathione, and protease enzymes.  Within two months, this patient returned for laboratory testing and discovered that his hepatitis viral load had plummeted to 100.   Since the patient did not take treatment with anything else, this is convincing proof to me that bovine colostrum works synergistically in a combined nutritional protocol," said Dr. Stephen Hynes.  "I've gone on to successfully treat many more cases of hepatitis C."

The immune factors in bovine colostrum include the following reported therapeutic components.

* Immunoglobulins IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM which perform their individual  function.
   Overall the immunoglobulins neutralize toxins and counter microbial attack.

* Lactoferrin iron-binding protein with anti-microbial properties.  It reduces the incidence 
   of cancer, HIV,  herpes, chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, and other infections.

* Proline-rich polypeptide  (PRP) hormone regulates the thymus and stimulates immunity.

* Leukocyte blood cells which stimulate interferon production to slow viral reproduction 
   and inhibit viral penetration of cell walls.

* Lysozyme hydrolyzing agent boosts the immune system.

* Enzymes such as lactoperoxidase thiocyanate, peroxidase, and xaanthine which 
   release hydrogen peroxide to destroy microbes.

* Cytokines which are interleukins that control cell to cell communication, boost T-cell activity
    and generally intensify immune response.

* Glycoproteins and Trypsin Inhibitors which protect immune factors and growth factors 
   in colostrum from destruction in the stomach and GI tract.  As described in a study above,
   they prevent Helicobactor pylori from attaching to the stomach wall.

* Lymphokine hormone-like peptides that regulate immune system response.

* Oligo polysaccarides and glycoconjugate saccharides which attract and bind to microbes 
   such as strepto-coccus, salmonella, cryptosporidia, giardia, entamoeba, shigella, clostridium,
   escharichia, difficile toxins A & B, and cholera to prevent their attachment to the intestinal
   mucosa.

* Additional immune factors involve the presence of orotic acid, secretory IgA, IgA specific helper, B lactoglobulin, lactalbumin, albumin prealbumin, alph 1-antitrpsin, alpha 1-fetoprotein, alpha 2-macroglobulin, haemopexin, haptoglobin, beta 2-microglobulin, alpha 2-AP glycoprotein, C3, C4, and orosomucoids.

Brent Wells, D.C. Declares Colostrum "Nature's Panacea"

ballturn.gif (1653 bytes) Responding to my query from St. Louis, Missouri, chiropractic nutritionist and kinesiologist Brent Wells, DC, at the Human Wellness Center remarked, "I find bovine colostrum is an incredibly powerful immune system stimulator which rehabilitates the digestive system and detoxifies it.  Colostrum does everything the literature tells us; my patients confirm this.  My routine procedure is to put all of my new patients on it for two months, taking four capsules twice daily on an empty stomach as a therapeutic dose and reducing thereafter to the maintenance dosage of one or two capsules twice daily, in the morning and late afternoon.  You shouldn't take colostrum too late in the day because it elevates the energy and may produce some insomnia.  The reason for my practice in this way is to provide the patient with colostrum's antimicrobial action to clean up any dormant but existing infections.
